: Could anyone please comment on their experiences with Compressor Controls recycle/surge control systems installed on centrifical compressors/blowers?

I have been involved in the installation of several Compressor Controls (CCC) systems on several compressors ranging from a shift gas compressor on an Steam Methane Reformer to Hydrogen Recycle compressors on Hydrocrackers.

I find that the systems can do an excellent job preventing surge while running the compressor system close to its surge line. Like any other technology, the CCC systems suffer when those implementing them don't understand the whole system. Traditionally, most of the CCC field engineers commission the systems to protect the compressor with little regard on how the controller tuning might affect the process. A knowledgeable Process Control person closely supervising the CCC field engineer who is commissioning can avoid this problem.

In El Paso, we have successfully written to the setpoint of a CCC Performance Controller as part of a DMC controller.
